The scholarships are for award to outstanding UK/EU/Overseas applicants and are intended to commence in the 2008/2009 academic year.

The scholarships have an annual bursary of £15,000 for the 2008/2009 academic year, and fee-settlement of the relevant annual tuition fee. Modelling Rupture of CO2 Pipelines

Department of Chemical Engineering

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is considered to be the most effective
way of tackling the effects of global warming. This will require the
large-scale capture, transportation and storage of CO2. In the case of
coal fired power generation plants, pressurised pipelines are considered
to be the most practical, and possibly the only option for transporting
the captured CO2 for subsequent storage.

Given the enormous amounts of CO2 contained in such pipelines (typically
several million tonnes), a prior knowledge of the release rate and
subsequent dispersion in the event of pipeline rupture is central to
assessing the failure impact. CO2 is toxic and when inhaled in large
concentrations can lead to asphyxiation.

This exciting PhD project aims to extend our award winning work
(http://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemeng/staff/mahgerefteh) to develop a computer
based model for predicting the failure consequences of CO2 pipelines.
The project carried out in close collaboration with a major industrial
partner is multidisciplinary involving a variety of subjects including,
fluid mechanics, mathematics, heat transfer, quantitative risk
assessment and computing. The experience gained is expected to equip the
prospective PhD graduate with job opportunities in a variety of
industrial sectors particularly in the oil and gas industry.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding First Class Chemical
Engineering or Mathematics graduate (although other relevant disciplines
will be considered) preferably with computing skills. The funding covers
full tuition fees plus maintenance over three years and is open to
suitably qualified overseas students.

UCL is consistently classed amongst the top Universities in the world.
The UCL Chemical Engineering department in particular received the
highest research rating in the most recent Government funded Research
Assessment Exercise placing it amongst the only three such departments
in the UK.

The concept of the project manager as a single point of integrative project leadership and responsibility is widely accepted as a fundamental principle of good practice. Now, professional guidelines in the emerging discipline of programme management advocate a similar single, integrative leadership status for the role of the programme manager. In practice, however, the leadership of programmes is inevitably distributed or shared among a changing group of individuals. The collective nature of programme leadership has important consequences for the behaviours and mindsets of individuals and for the governance structures within which they operate. There is a significant opportunity and need for the creation of new knowledge in this domain, and the development of new theories based on empirical evidence.

The mindsets of effective programme office managers: A phenomenographic study

In business and government, programmes are used to transform strategies and policies into desired outcomes and benefits. The 'programme office' is the information hub for the programme, performing on behalf of the programme leadership team a variety of functions associated with programme support. Some programme offices have wider responsibilities for the maintenance of corporate standards and processes.

There is a growing recognition that the role of programme office manager requires an individual with a certain mindset, but little is known about the conceptual attributes that make up that mindset. Phenomenography is an established research approach for identifying and mapping the qualitatively different ways in which people conceive a given aspect of reality, in this case the work of a programme office manager. The approach leads to the identification of the key attributes of conception at a number of levels (usually three of four) that distinguish and explain why some individuals are more effective than others.

One certainty in a world increasingly saturated with complexity and uncertainty is that the future will be punctuated by sudden, unexpected, and potent events that will require a rapid response. The variety of crisis that can arise in projects and programmes is enourmous.

However, there are very few detailed accounts of crisis management. This PhD study will explore the phenomenon of crisis in projects and programmes - its nature, its causes and its resulting managerial behaviour. The United States Indonesia Society (USINDO) invites applications for its two 2009 travel/study grants for post-doctoral scholars, Ph.D. candidates, senior academics, and otherwise professionally qualified candidates to engage in field research in Indonesia on an economic or political-economic topic.  One grant is available to United States citizens and permanent residents in the United States with a specific project relating to the political economy of Indonesia . The Indonesian Sumitro Fellowship is open to an Indonesian citizen with a project related to the Indonesia-United States bilateral relationship.  Previous travel to, and experience in, Indonesia or the United States (for Indonesian Sumitro applicants) is desirable but not necessarily a requirement.  The deadline for the 2009 Sumitro Fellows Applications is Friday, October 31, 2008.
 
The Sumitro Fellows program honors Dr. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, Indonesia 's senior economist and advisor to USINDO, who passed away in 2001.  An architect of Indonesia 's modern economy, Professor Sumitro headed the faculty of economics at the University of Indonesia , and was later a minister of trade and minister of state for research.  Professor Sumitro was also the driving force behind a 1950's program of the Ford Foundation which sent Indonesian economists to U.S. academic institutions for advanced degrees.  Many attended the University of California at Berkeley and the group came to be known as the "Berkeley Mafia" when its members assumed many key cabinet posts in subsequent decades.
 
The Sumitro Fellows grants for the 2009 application cycle are $10,000 each.
 
Sumitro Fellows Application Guidelines for 2009
 
Eligibility: Applicants for the US Sumitro Fellowship must be United States citizens or permanent residents in the United States with a specific project on Indonesia 's political economy.  Applications outside the scope of economics or political economy will not be considered.  Applicants for the Indonesian Sumitro Fellowship must be Indonesian citizens with a specific project on any aspect of the Indonesian-US bilateral relationship.  Applications related strictly to American topics or on non-US or non-Asian themes will not be considered.  Applicants will be considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age and/or physical impairment.
 
Language Proficiency: Please note that though not compulsory, prior study of Bahasa Indonesia is helpful in conducting field research.  Applicant should indicate on the application form if and at what level the language has been studied, both formally and informally.  Indonesian applicants must be capable of advanced study in English.  Evidence of English fluency may be demonstrated by TOEFL scores.
 
Notification:  USINDO will announce the winner in December 2008.

For the academic year 2008/2009 Università degli Studi di Padova,
Italy, offers 15 research fellowships for foreign students to attend
Doctoral Schools/International Courses (see annex 1: list and related

All the positions will be covered by scholarships fully funded by
Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo.
During the 3-year doctoral programme (2009-2011), the successful
candidates will be offered full board and lodging at the ESU – Azienda
Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario.
The connected charges will be covered by Università degli Studi di

Doctoral courses will last 3 years.

student the chance to go on assignment with renowned wildlife
photographer Jason Edwards!

The brief is to photograph the Arid Lands Festival and The Great
Hughenden Endurance Camel Race - a 160 km camel endurance race run in
the stunningly beautiful area of Porcupine Gorge in Outback
Queensland, Australia.

As part of this assignment, you will work alongside and receive
mentorship from Jason Edwards, gaining valuable hands-on experience in
everything from shot set up, technique and composition through to

What you'll be doing

* We'll fly you in from your country of residence to Longreach,
Australia. You'll need to be available to be in Australia between
August 19-26, 2008. The festival dates are August 22,23 & 24, 2008.

* In Hughenden, you will work alongside Jason Edwards photographing
the camel race, festival events and local landscape. Your assignment
will involve observing and assisting Jason as well as undertaking your
own photographic work. This involves VERY early mornings, and long
days chasing the perfect shot, this is not a pool-side holiday!

* You will keep a daily diary about your time on the trip and upload
this to a World Nomads travel journal, including pictures you've taken.

* On your return you will submit your top photographs to National
Geographic Channel for publication on www.natgeotv.com.au.

* Most of all, you'll be experiencing what it's like to be a
photographer-on-asssignment with National Geographic!

* To be eligible you have to be currently enrolled and actively
studying at a recognised educational tertiary institution and speak
and write fluent English.

* You must have a valid drivers licence and be comfortable driving a
manual vehicle. This is the Outback!

The ASEAN Scholarships for Indonesia is tenable for 4 years leading
to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of
Education `Advanced' (GCE `A') Level (or equivalent) certificate.

The Scholarship is for studies in selected Singapore schools from
Secondary Three to Pre-University Two and is renewed annually,
subject to the satisfactory performance of the scholar.

Students from Indonesia are welcome to apply for the ASEAN
Scholarships for Indonesia to enter Singapore schools at the
Secondary Three level. Candidates who are not short-listed for the
scholarships will be considered for the Merit Awards.

Eligibility
Students who meet the following criteria are invited to apply for the

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships for High School

Deadline: 30 May 2008 - 25 June 2008

The Embassy of Japan is offering Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho)
Scholarships to Indonesian high school graduates who wish to study at
University (S-1); Colleges of Technology (D-3) or Professional
Training Colleges (D-2) in Japan for the academic year 2009 (April
2009). An applicant can only apply for one program, either S-1, D-3
or D-2.

Applicants must have the following qualifications (among others);(1)
Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1987 and April 1, 1992
(2) The average result of the final examination and school report for
the last semester/term of the third scholastic year must be at a
minimum;
- 8.4 for the S-1 program,
- 8.0 for the D-3 program,
- 8.0 for the D-2 program.

* In the case that an official score of the final examination can not
be issued by the closing date (June 25, 2008), a temporary score
which is certified by the head teacher will be accepted.
(3) Applicants must have graduated from a senior high school.

Application forms are available free of charge for those who meet the
above qualifications at the Embassy of Japan (Education Section:8:30-
12:00, 14:00-15:30), the Consulate General of Japan in Surabaya,
Medan and Makassar starting from May 30, 2008.
Those who are living outside of JABODETABEK, Surabaya, Medan and
Makassar can apply by sending a letter, which includes name, date of
birth, address, phone number, desired program (S-1, D-3 or D-2) and 3
desired fields of study, to the Embassy of Japan (Jl.M.H.Thamrin 24,
Jakarta Pusat 10350) or the Consulate Generals of Japan by post along
with their copies of school report, certificate (ijazah) and the
score of the final examination.

The Faculty of Engineering

A number of Ph.D.-scholarships at the Faculty of Engineering will be
available as of 1st September 2008.

The scholarships may be sought by students who wish to obtain a PhD
degree, either without or with a previous Master's degree, and who
have agreed on a PhD project with a supervisor employed at the
Faculty of Engineering.

For applicants with a relevant Master's degree, the scholarship will
be for three years of study.

The applications are evaluated based on a number of criteria: the
quality of the applicant (publications, grades, references, etc.),
the quality of the project, and the degree of co-financing (by the
supervisor, a Ph.D.-school, or the applicant). Special consideration
will be given to projects with relation to the strategic research
areas of the faculty. However, some scholarships will be based on an
open competition among the applicants.

The scolarships will be awarded within the Research Training
Programmes at the Faculty:

PhD Research Scholarship

Launched in November 2005, the SEARCA PhD Research Scholarship
provides financial support to a limited number of qualified PhD
students whose researches are relevant to the priority thrusts of
SEARCA.

This scholarship program aims to:
Provide PhD students the opportunity to use the resources and
facilities available at SEARCA and its network of universities for
their research;
Produce quality research papers for publication; and
Enable them to work with SEARCA's R&D personnel on mutually
identified areas of concerns/interests in agriculture and rural
development.

Eligibility for the Grant
Any graduate student who is a citizen of any SEAMEO member country
and pursuing a PhD in agriculture or related sciences from any
university in the world is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

The applicant must have already completed his/her course work with an
approved dissertation proposal and is ready to conduct the
dissertation research.The applicant's research must focus on any of
SEARCA's priority thrusts under the broad themes of natural resource
management and promotion of agricultural competitiveness.

Its people are Southeast Asia's most potent force for progress.
Hence, agricultural human resource development has been SEARCA's
primary goal since its establishment. SEARCA is one of the "centers
of excellence" established by SEAMEO. As such, SEARCA assists SEAMEO
member countries in producing highly trained human resources in
agriculture and related sciences to accelerate agricultural and rural
development in Southeast Asia.

Two of SEARCA's activities that carry out this mandate are the
Graduate Study Program and the University Consortium. Both activities
are handled by the Graduate Scholarship Department (GSD).
This degree scholarship was initiated in academic year 1968-69 and
aims to ensure the relevance and responsiveness of Southeast Asia's
agricultural scientists and professionals to global sustainable
development issues.

The program provides support for advanced studies leading to the MS
and PhD degrees in agriculture, forestry, and related fields. Thus,
SEARCA aims to prepare grantees for positions of leadership in
developing economies of SEAMEO member countries.

Applicants may also view information on benefits and privileges of
scholars, places of study, application procedures, where to apply,
recruitment procedures, and conditions of the grant.
Benefits and Privileges
The SEARCA scholarship offers the following benefits and privileges:
Financial Support covers stipend, tuition, international and domestic
travel allowances, thesis/dissertation support, book allowance, and
health insurance. The domestic travel allowance is sometimes allowed
to support registration fees in training courses/seminars/workshops.

Discounted Accommodation. Scholars are encouraged to stay at the
SEARCA Residence Hotel (SRH) to meet other graduate students of
different nationalities. Scholars who bring their families with them
can stay in SEARCA apartments, also at subsidized rental fee.

Assistance with Student Visa Processing. The Center takes care of
processing the extension of its scholars' student visas for the
duration of their scholarship.

Computer Purchase Loan. This is given to scholars without interest
and payable to the Center in a specified number of months through
automatic stipend deduction.

In-house and Other Training Courses or Seminars. Scholars may avail
of these training courses upon request, especially in fields related
to their studies. Official functions like the weekly SEARCA
Agriculture and Development Seminar Series are also open to them.
They are, therefore, exposed to exchange of ideas outside their
classrooms.

Use of SEARCA Facilities. Facilities open to SEARCA scholars are the
Center's Library and Email Room. Scholars studying at UPLB are given
free SEARCA e-mail accounts and e-mail access.

Participation in Sociocultural Activities. SEARCA scholars are
introduced to the SEARCA family through orientation/welcome party.
Being part of the SEARCA family, they are invited to the Center's
summer outing, sportsfest, anniversary celebration, and Christmas
parties.

Counseling. Scholars who are experiencing academic difficulties and
those with personal problems may seek guidance from the Graduate
Scholarship Department.

Application Procedure
Any interested national of a SEAMEO member country may apply for
scholarship. Applications may be submitted to any one of the
following Ministries of his/her own country:
Ministy of Education
Ministry of Agriculture
Ministry of Forestry
Ministry of Fisheries
Ministry of Rural Development

Application forms and information brochures on the universities that
may serve as study posts of SEARCA scholars are available at these
Ministries.

Each applicant is required to submit the following documents:
SEARCA Scholarship Application Form (2 copies);
Application forms for admission to the Graduate School of the
universities where the applicant may pursue graduate studies under
SEARCA scholarship;
Official transcript of academic records of each degree completed (BS
transcript for MS applicants and BS and MS transcripts for PhD
applicants);
Certification of employment;
A two-page write-up on agricultural competitiveness or natural
resource management;
A brief description of the research that the applicant plans to
conduct for thesis/dissertation. The research topic must be in line
with the priority thrusts of SEARCA. (SEARCA Five-Year Plan may be

Two copies of passport-size pictures of the applicant;
Certification from a medical doctor that the applicant is in good
physical and mental health condition and is fit to undertake graduate
studies;
Official endorsement from the employer;
Results of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): score of
550 for paper-based and 213 for computer-based) or IELTS results
(6.0). The TOEFL results must be issued by Princeton, New Jersey,
USA. Check the schedule and venue of TOEFL tests in your country at

copy of the schedule here .

PhD Assistantships are available for the start of Fall 2008 (mid-August) or
for Spring (January) 2009. All tuition fees and a stipend for living expenses

Master's degree in Communication Disorders or a Master's or honors bachelor
degree in Linguistics. Candidates from outside the US can apply if they have
a good honours bachelor degree in Speech-Language Therapy if that is the
qualifying level for the profession.

Speech Sciences. Supervision is offered in all areas of language and speech
disorders but not in audiology. For a Fall 2008 start, candidates should

Location: University of Saskatchewan
Academic Program: Department of Geography, or School of Environment and
Sustainability
Project: We are seeking a M.Sc. student with an interest in water resources
and environmental effects assessment in watersheds.

You will join a Canada Water Network research team of 8 professors from 6
universities, including 6 graduate students, working together to develop The
Healthy River Ecosystem Assessment System (THREATS) for assessing and
adaptively managing the cumulative effects of human developments on Canadian
freshwaters. The project is based at the University of Saskatchewan and led
by Dr. Monique Dube, CRC in Aquatic Ecosystem Health Diagnosis.

Start date: September, 2008 (summer start date or availability for summer
field work preferred)

To apply, applicants must

* Hold a bachelor's degree and have completed 16 years of school
education (up to undergraduate level). A strong background in
economics and associated quantitative tools is useful and,in the case
of the Economic Policy Course, highly recommended.

NOTE: Those applicants having completed their university education in
countries where formal schooling lasts less than 16 years, who are at
least 22 years old, and who have spent at least one year in a research
or similar institution, can become qualified to apply by filling out
